Theatre Reading: The Complete Truth Of The Life And Death Of Kurt Cobain, by Peca Stefan
The Piece
Nadia, Karel and Dodo - Here we are now, entertain us - want to be Rockstars, but they also want to try getting married, being healthy in their ballet shoes and escaping from HIV. We meet them in Bucharest, now, suspended between the dreamlike strength of youth and the relative firmness of growing up with all its duties and opportunities. Together and very individually they look West and forward searching for their big moment in the big wide freedom. What would Kurt have said? But he is suddenly gone. And they are just starting out.
Peca's characters are playing on present day fascination with the USA, fame and celebrity, they have a hangover from Romania's past, are wonderfully overenergised and want to go forward creatively. Their worlds are complex, enriched by a wealth of references to modern media and a deep longing for happiness. Peca's scenarios are inadvertently postmodern and full of dark comedy, operating on direct and indirect levels of presentation, and usually boasting an appearance by Peca himself.
