Attic Arts 2011 Winners

March - July 2011
     

The Romanian Cultural Institute brings to London the first winners of the Attic Arts residency programme: Vera Ion, Sorin Poama and Ioan Titu (aka Silent Strike).

The winners have been selected from a number of 61 applications, according to the following criteria, each marked with maximum 5 points:

  • relevant artistic quality and interest for current approaches in the field in the UK;
  • ability to identify partnerships with UK individuals or organisations, with whom can develop the project;
  • professional experience;
  • preparedness to present the project at the end of the residency or within, at most, 1 year of the residency completion, depending on the nature of the project;
  • ability to speak and write fluently in English.

A second round of applications will be organised in May 2011 to select the two remaining residents.

The first artists who will be taking residence in the Institute's Bohemian attic in 2011 are:

Vera Ion - theatre director and playwright, graduated from the MA Cross Sectoral and Community Arts, Goldsmiths College London and BA Theatre Directing, National University of Drama and Film "I.L. Caragiale" in Bucharest.
At the RCI London she will work on the project Busk for Your Life! together with actor and playwright Sorin Poama. The project aims to document Romanian immigrants who work as street artists on Southbank and in Covent Garden. The results of the interviews and discussions will be used for a play that will be further developed in partnership with Firehouse Creative Productions in London.

Sorin Poama - actor and playwright, winner of the Best Play Award for Ich Clown, Constantin Tanase Comedy Festival, 2010 and Best Actor Award, UNATC Gala, Bucharest, Cassandra Theatre, 2007.
During the residency he will work with Vera Ion on the project Busk for Your Life! addressing the stories of the Romanian immigrants who work as street artists on Southbank and in Covent Garden, London. His work is based on developing diverse research and event frames that empower people to talk about their life and experiences.

Ioan Titu (aka Silent Strike) - music composer and sound designer, has performed in over 20 national and international music festivals. He has already released three albums: Silent Strike (2005), 3AM featuring Lucian Ban and Alex Harding (2008) and White (2009). His music is considered highly versatile, twisting jazz, hip hop, electro and film scoring.
At the RCI London he will work on the Silent Strike & Madam experimental music album in collaboration with London based artist Sukie Smith (aka Madam). He will also perform live in various London venues to be confirmed.
