When did you open in London?
We opened 'on paper' and cut a ribbon in September 2004. But 'in real life' we only started in July 2006, when we set up a team and started a building renovation project in 1 Belgrave Square.

Does the Institute occupy the whole building?
Yes, in many ways: office space, staff flats, transit flats and public space (exhibition room, concert and receptions hall).

Who organised the cultural events which have taken place in 1 Belgrave Sq before 2006?
The cultural section of the Romanian Embassy, who 'filled in' during our absence and promoted the events under joint auspices.

Are you the new cultural section of the Romanian Embassy?
No. The Institute is a separate organisation under the patronage of the Romanian President; we are part of a
15-centre network worldwide.

Are you the same thing as the Romanian Cultural Centre?
No, just similarity of name. They, the Centre, are an independent, privately funded NGO established in 1994 by a group of London based Romanians. We, the Institute, are an independent, not-for-profit organisation established by the Romanian state in 2004 following the restructuring of the Romanian Cultural Foundation.

Where do you get your funding from?
Cultural programme-funding from our headquarters, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest. Running costs-funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who own the 1 Belgrave Square building.

Can you receive commercial sponsorship?
Yes, both sponsorship and donations in support of our cultural projects, on the basis of contracts which outline the joint benefits.

Do you rent out your space?
No, but we offer it free-of-charge as our contribution to various partnership or fund-raising projects.

Will you charge for your events?
No, not for the ones ICR London organises in 1 Belgrave Square or in some of our partner venues. Our partners may charge however for events held in commercial venues (e.g. cinema, fairs) or for fund-raising in support of Romanian cultural programmes which ICR is associated with.

Do you receive proposals for cultural projects?
Yes. We welcome proposals both from Romania and the UK. Please
contact us for a preliminary discussion. You will subsequently be invited to fill out this application form (Microsoft Word file, 229 KB).

Do you provide Romanian language courses?
No, not yet. You can learn Romanian at the
summer-school held by the Romanian Cultural Institute in Romania. Alternatively, in London, you can get in touch with the SSEES (UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies).

Do you have a library or resource centre?
No, but during 2007 we shall put together a lending resource of Romanian documentary and feature film videos; photographs and reference books.
