In Romania the 1st of March is called Martisor, symbolized by this delicate red&white braided silk thread – which women and girls wear in jubilation of the arrival of Spring. We ‘wrap’ ourselves in Martisor too – and invite you to our new season of events .

| What's on: |
- 3 March, 4 pm: Third Shore - Romanian writer Carmen-Francesca Banciu will join the Spit-Lit Festival in London, launching The Third Shore, a vibrant and innovative anthology from East Central Europe, alongside the Latvian author Nora Ikstena. The two authors will read their novels and talk about women's fiction from East Central Europe.

- 5 March, 6.30 pm: Portraits and jazz - An exclusive exhibition of new polychrome sculptures by celebrated Romanian artist Mariana Gordan. The opening event is accompanied by Monica Madas' concert of traditional Romanian songs with a touch of jazz and a puppet show with a story to tell. And at least one more surprise!

- 19 March, 6 pm: Romanian video-art - Experimental, documentary and narrative videos by some of the best Romanian contemporary artists selected by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London will be screened at the opening lecture by Zygmunt Bauman at the London Festival of Europe.

- 20 March, 2.30 pm: Periferic - A Biennial on the Edge - presentation by Romanian artist Matei Bejenaru at the Romanian Cultural Institute-supported London Festival of Europe, Looking East: Contemporary Art from Eastern Europe section. How are artists from Eastern Europe negotiating their new European identity? Panel debate with: Sarah Wilson, Olga Mala, Pavel Lesszkowicz and Tomek Kitlinsky.

- 25 March, 7.30 pm: Ins and Outs in Eastern Europe - presentation by Romanian sociologist Calin Cotoi at the Romanian Cultural Institute-supported London Festival of Europe, Contested Borders, Contested Values section. Is there a single European identity or set of values? Can those values be defined by borders? Panel debate with: Kirsty Hughes, Kalypso Nicolaidis, Maurice Fraser.

- Permanent, from 29 Jan: Bridges to the world - Landscapes, portraits and religious icons made by students from "Veniamin Costachi" Vocational College (Manastirea Neamt) are exhibited at Grangetown Library.
