The World according to Ion B by Alexander Nanau

Friday 7 May, 7.30pm

Alexander Nanau's film presents the story of Ion Barladeanu, who changed within a year from being a homeless man living on the streets of Bucharest to a world-renowned artist, whose work has been exhibited alongside that of Andy Warhol.

Art world swoons over Romania's homeless genius - 63-year-old former tramp celebrated for collages made during the Ceausescu regime. For Ion B., the journey from the streets of Bucharest to the galleries of Europe has finally granted him recognition.
"I feel as if I have been born again," he said, as some of France's leading collectors and curators jostled for position to see his collages. "Now I feel like a prince. A pauper can become a prince. But he can go back to being a pauper too."

The Guardian

Alexander Nanau started filming his documentary the moment Ion B.'s art was discovered. The film is a glimpse into what Eastern Europe still has to offer: undiscovered greatness and talent, people who learned to hide in order to save their inner truth and survive the communist regime.
In March 2010, The World According to Ion B. won the Gopo prize for best documentary film. The film is currently on tour in various international festivals.
The film was produced by HBO Romania and Alexander Nanau Production in Association with Avro-Netherlands, YLE Teema and SVT Sweden.

Followed by Q&A with Director Alexander Nanau.

The event is part of the London International Documentary Film Festival. In association with the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.
