Politics of Memory in Post-Communist Europe

     

The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and for the Memory of Romanian Exile, UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies, with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London will organize the launching event of the first issue of the yearbook History of Communism in Europe. The yearbook is an interdisciplinary forum that explores multifaceted history of the communist regimes in Romania, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere.

The conference will benefit from the presence and opening remarks of HE Dr Ion Jinga, the Ambassador of Romania to the Court of St James's.

The History of Communism's first issue, entitled Politics of Memory in Post-Communist Europe, examines themes like memory, nostalgia and historical past of the former Soviet bloc - Romania, Hungary, former Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, former GDR, Poland, former USSR and former Yugoslavia.

The conference will be held by a select group of British and Romanian academics and researchers:
Prof Dennis Deletant - Professor of Romanian Studies, UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies
Dr Mihail Neamtu - Scientific Director, the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and for the Memory of Romanian Exile
Bogdan Iacob - Secretary of the Scientific Council, the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of Romanian Exile
Corina Dobos - Expert, the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of Romanian Exile
Marius Stan - Expert, the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and for the Memory of Romanian Exile

The speakers will look at the history and philosophical and ideological mutations of the Communist doctrinal monism, as well as at the everyday life and the interaction between majority and minority groups during Communist dictatorships.
