First Winner of the Enescu Scholarship @ ICR London

          

The young & talented musician Karim Said, who won the first Enescu scholarship for 2009-2010, will give a piano recital in the established concert series of the Enescu Society.

Karim Said is a 21 year-old pianist from Jordan, whose remarkable talent was spotted at an early age by Daniel Barenboim. He had masterclasses and music courses at The Habib Kayaleh Music Academy in Switzerland, private and public masterclasses with Daniel Barenboim and conducting masterclasses at the Royal College of Music with Bernard Haitink. His work with Barenboim was followed by acclaimed documentary film-maker Christopher Nupen, over a period of six years. The resulting film, entitled Karim's Journey, premiered at the Barbican in May 2008.

Karim has performed all over the world, with conductors and orchestras such as The West Eastern Divan Orchestra (under Daniel Barenboim) and The English Chamber Orchestra (under Clark Rundell). He has performed at venues such as Wigmore Hall and St. John Smith's Square, in London and the Norwegian Opera House, in Oslo. Karim has won prizes at various competitions in Romania (Bucharest, 1998: 1st Prize and Star Prize, Pro Piano International Competition), Lithuania (Kaunas, 2001: 2nd Prize, Gradus ad Parnassum International Competition), the United Kingdom (Watford, 2001: 1st Prize, Watford Festival), Germany (Weimar, 2005: Best Performance of a 20th Century Work, Special Audience Prize and additional Prize from the Chair of the Jury). Karim also has some conducting experience: Beethoven's 7th Symphony at the Purcell School, UK (performance), Brahms' 3rd Symphony, at the Royal College of Music, UK (masterclass), Beethoven's 2nd Symphony, at LSO St. Luke's (masterclass), Schubert 5th Symphony, at the Royal Cultural Centre, Jordan (performance).
Since January 2010 he won the Harold Craxton Chamber music Prize, and the Harriet Cohen Bach Prize at the Royal Academy of Music.
Karim made his Prom debut playing Berg's Kammerkonzert in 2009, and he gave his Barbican Debut with the English Chamber Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis in 2009.
His engagements included a recital and chamber music at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, a recital at the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi, chamber music at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Chamber Music in Korea and tours in Berlin, Essen, Salzburg and London.
Future events include performances of the Wesendonck Lieder at the Louvre in Paris with Waltraud Meier, and Berg's Kammerkonzert in Buenos Aires later on this year.

From September 2009 the Romanian Cultural Institute awards the Enescu Society sholarship to a student at the Royal Academy of Music.
