Romanian contemporary dance @ Southbank Centre

       

Following the success of its first edition, dancEUnion returns to Southbank Centre presenting 21 rising stars, the best choreographers of the European dance scene, to perform excerpts from their best performances.

Madalina Dan's piece The Illusionists (Iluzionistele) was selected, together with works from other 20 EU countries, to celebrate the diversity of the current trends in European contemporary dance.

First day of the festival features pieces by Madalina Dan (Romania), Elina Breice (Letonia), Tereza Lenerova (Cehia), Barbara Bujakowska & Marcin Janus (Polonia), and Liv O'Donoghue (Irlanda).

Produced by the National Centre of Dance Bucharest, The Illusionists (Iluzionistele) is regarded by dance critics as an innovative show that can be perceived in various ways: as a performance, as a modern adaptation of the popular fairy tale or as a form of theatre of the absurd.

The "Illusion" of Madalina Dan proposes a very special experience, immersive by connecting to rhythms and intensities, with a mixture of sound, music and visual effects. And all together make up a sublime (yet very fragile) composition.

Madalina Dan is a young choreographer who studied dance at the National University of Theatre and Cinematography in Bucharest. In 2008 she was awarded the "danceWEB Scholarship-Vienna" for contemporary dance. Selected works: Splitting / Dedublarea, presented at Springdance Festival and Tanzquartier Vienna in 2009; The Illusionists / Iluzionistele, show produced by the National Center of Dance Bucharest; Beginning, Middle, End in collaboration with Andrea Bozic (Croatia / Netherlands) and Michael Pinchbeck (UK), a show that premiered at Springdance Festival Utrecht in 2009.

The Illusionists (Iluzionistele) is presented in the UK with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.
