Mircea Cartarescu @ University of Cambridge

Romanian poet and novelist Mircea Cartarescu will read from his book Nostalgia and meet academics and students in Cambridge.

The astonishing Nostalgia by Mircea Cartarescu "introduces to English a writer who has always had a place reserved for him in a constellation that includes the Brothers Grimm, Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, Bruno Schulz, Julio Cortazar, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Milan Kundera, and Milorad Pavic, to mention just a few." (Andrei Codrescu). The book has been translated in English by Julian Semilian and has been published in the US at the New Directions Publishing House, New York, 2005.

The lecture at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, will start with an introduction by Dr Ian Fairley, translator of Paul Celan's 'Fathomsuns' and 'Snow Part'.

Mircea Cartarescu has won all the important Romanian literary prizes and published over 25 books and a large number of articles. His works have been translated into 14 languages, bringing him international critical acclaim. In 1992 he was nominated for the Médicis prize in France and in 2005 he was honored with the Acerbi Award in Italy. At present he is an Associate Professor in the Romanian Literature Department of the University of Bucharest. In 2007 he had promoting tours in Sweden, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Poland. In 2008 he had readings at the Leipzig Book Fair, the Goteborg Book Fair and the Torino Book Fair.
