This month's programme

Our first event this year is an evening of chamber music by the rising star of Romanian contemporary music, composer and violinist Vlad Maistorovici. The line-up of performers includes award-winning musicians such as violist Daniel Palmizio, pianist Diana Ionescu, soprano Eliana Pretorian and members of the Finzi Quartet, Mercury Quartet and Consortium5.

Radu Ropotan (violin) and Dan Marginean (piano) will be performing at St Martin-in-the-Fields within the Young Romanian Musicians in London Series, relaunched in April 2011. In the programme: Grieg, Ravel and Wieniawski.

After a series of outstanding performances in 2011, the current season of the Enescu Concerts Series continues with internationally-acclaimed musicians and tireless promoters of Enescu's music Ilian Garnet, Claudia Bara and Justus Grimm. Expect an extraordinary display of virtuosity and panache.

Romania's most talented designers Dinu Bodiciu, Mihaela Glavan, Irina Marinescu, Carmen Secareanu and Dan Mihai Zarug have a flair for romance and fantasy: against the odds, they deliver beauty in its purest forms, keeping alive the hope that beyond the horizon lies a promised land.
They exhibit at ICR London, within the International Fashion Showcase at the London Fashion Week 2012.

Morgen, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno film festival, will be screened at the Tricycle Cinema's International Oscar® Season in London with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute. Leading actor Andras Hathazi will join us for a Q&A session.

Romania has a strong presence for the second consecutive year at Ireland's biggest film festival, with three recent productions. The full programme will be announced at the official press conference on 2 February, so stay with us and find out which films made the final list. We assure you that they are top-notch!

This year's EUNIC documentary festival entitled Ready, Steady, Doc! brings together 14 films about sports from 12 European countries. Discover our inspirational proposals: Australia, directed by Claudiu Mitcu, and From Romania with Love, directed by Rene Eckert.

Our training and coaching scheme in cultural diplomacy continues in 2012 with the arrival of young editor and publisher Alexandra Rusu, the second recipient of the scholarship since the launch of the programme in 2011.

Applications open for the Attic Arts 2012 residency programme. The residency offers time and space for Romanian and Moldovan artists to create new projects in collaboration with ICR and London based professionals and institutions.

One of the most discernible poetic voices in contemporary Romanian letters, Claudiu Komartin is our current artist-in-residence c/o the Attic Arts programme. Claudiu works on a poetry translation project to be published this year.
Come and meet him on 15 Jan at Stephen Watts and Cristina Viti's book launch, where he features as a special guest together with singer-songwriter Monooka.

After an original and successful opening of the 2011/2012 season with Contraste Trio, we invite you to a recital of two of the most accomplished specialists of Enescu’s music: cellist Catalin Ilea and pianist Michael Abramovich.

Although it's not Christmas yet, director Iulia Rugina will attend the 2011 European Psychoanalytic Film Festival with her Stuck on Christmas, a film about small gestures, big stories and ordinary people.

 

Lia Perjovschi, one of Romania’s leading contemporary artists, opens her first exhibition in Ireland with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute London, as part of the TULCA Art Festival in Galway.

Following her 2010 memorable performance in 1 Belgrave Square, charismatic singer Maria Raducanu is back in London with an explosive mingling of Romanian ethos and nowadays music (blues, jazz, avant-garde).

Nottara Theatre from Bucharest showcases, at Barbican Centre, Vlad Massaci's stage version of Festen by Thomas Vinterberg and Mogens Rukov. The production is a sample of world class directing and performance and marks the come back of the Romanian theatre on the London stage after more than 13 years of absence.

Director Vlad Massaci will explain why truth needs to be repeated over and over again in order to be taken into consideration, in life as well as on stage. Meet him in conversation with John O’Mahony, Guardian journalist, and Anca Ionita, theatre critic and editor in chief of Time Out Bucharest.

Vasile Garnet will conclude the 2011 series Contemporary Romanian Poets organised in partnership with Poet in the City. Mario Petrucci will join the Romanian poet as special guest.
 

Acclaimed pianist Lucian Ban, accompanied by an exceptional group of musicians, will perform Enescu Re-Imagined at London Jazz Festival.

The Wunderkind of Romanian contemporary classical music, the prodigal pianist and composer, Matei Bucur Mihaescu will appear for the first time this autumn in London, part of New Music Series. Matei will play some of his most recent compositions.

The Romanian art collective Apparatus 22 will mark its first international presence in the Wednesday Night Open Forum Events at the Glasgow School of Art, with support from the Romanian Cultural Institute London.

Do not miss Radu Munteanu’s Boogie, one of the best films made by the young generation of Romanian directors! Boogie is a film about Romanians in their 30's who try to reconcile marriage and partying, freedom and responsibility, adolescence and adulthood.

Romanian artist Anca Benera is the third recipient of the Attic Arts Residency at the Romanian Cultural Institute, organised this autumn in collaboration with Camden Arts Centre.
 

We are proud to announce the 2012 competition to select three recipients for our Cultural Diplomacy Residency programme. Each residency will provide three months of intense training and networking for young Romanian and Moldavian cultural managers.

 Enescu’s Farewell – A Symphony for Twelve

A celebration of a musical genius: Enescu’s last, most intimate and possibly greatest work - written in Paris during his final months, in 1954 - The Chamber Symphony for 12 Solo Instruments will be heard in London for the first time. Pre-concert talk by Noel Malcolm, distinguished scholar and journalist, author of George Enescu’s much acclaimed biography.

 Miruna Vlada @ Poet in the City

Following three inspiring evenings with Denisa Comanescu, Claudiu Komartin and Bogdan Ghiu, we are proud to continue the Contemporary Romanian Poets series with the young and provocative Miruna Vlada. Publishing her first anthology Ectopic Poems (2004) at just 18, Miruna famously provoked a public debate about ‘feminine’ writing. Her most recent collection, Break Between Veins, was published in 2007.

 Sherban Lupu: Concert & CD Launch

We are delighted to organise the next London concert of the acclaimed violinist Sherban Lupu. On this ocasion, the second volume of the series Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst: Complete Music for Violin and Piano will be launched. Recorded by Sherban Lupu – violin and Ian Hobson – piano, the CD is published in the UK by Toccata Classics.

 The New Romanian Cinema arrives in Iceland

After Belfast, Dublin and London, Reykjavik is our next stop in 2011! Be prepared to alight in the world of New Romanian Cinema as Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF) has a focus on Romania this year. This is a project organised by RIFF in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute in London and includes screenings, exhibition and concert, among others.

 Sunday at Six @ Romanian Cinematheque

A rare chance to see Lucian Pintilie's debut film Sunday at Six (1965), set in the 1940s, during the buildup of the Romanian People’s Republic.
The film follows the romance between two Communist revolutionaries who find their mutual affection at cross-purposes with the interests of the Party.
