Meanders @ Romanian Cinematheque

20/09/2012 @ Romanian Cultural Institute, 1 Belgrave Square, SW1X 8PH

We are proud to re-open the Romanian Cinematheque with one of the masterpieces of Romanian cinema,  Meanders (1967), a profound and revolutionary classic by legendary director Mircea Săucan.

The film speaks about two different worldviews and approaches to self-fulfillment through an abstract confrontation that leads to concrete victims: a wife gives up on her love, a son loses faith in himself and in his parents alike. Beautifully performed by Mihai Pǎlǎdescu, Ernest Maftei, Margareta Pogonat and Dan Nuţu.

The release of Meanders created a huge scandal and was followed by the film’s banning by the Communist party. "I have spent my whole life in meanders, only in meanders. They fired me, excluded and included me, decomposed me, destroyed me” - confessed director and writer Mircea Săucan to film critic Iulia Blaga.
