Madalina Paval Band: Album Launch and Concert

21/02/2020 @ St Cyprian's, London

Join us for an evening with Madalina Paval, a rising star of fusion folk music whose distinctive style combines traditional Romanian tunes with modern influences. Madalina will perform songs from her new album ‘Oamenii se fac dor / People turn into longing’ together with Raluca Antonovici (piano), Gabriel Matei (percussion), Raluca Stratulat (violin).

Her album represents a melancholic mixture of old and new, giving voice to profound longing and nostalgia of ‘home’, family and friends by reinterpreting iconic Romanian folk melodies and taking inspiration from old orchestral scores by Enescu, Bartok, Dimitrie Cantemir and Anton Pann. At the same time, the artist is not afraid to explore themes related to ‘identity’ and to come up with new idioms in an animated dialogue with the Romanian language.

The 25-year old singer from Suceava (Northern Romania) has always had a passion for music, starting to sing at the age of 10. It was in highschool that she started her collaboration with the influential band Subcarpati, a group that bridged the gap between traditional Romanian folk music and genres such as electronic and hip hop, creating what is known as underground folk music. Madalina Paval released her album ‘Oamenii se fac dor’ in November 2019.
