At Home in Belgrave Square: Martisorul

Saturday, 6 March 2010, 2pm

Martisorul opens At Home in Belgrave Square - a new programme hosted by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, showcasing cultural projects initiated by members of the Romanian community.
The programme is under the patronage of HE Dr Ion Jinga, the Ambassador of Romania in the United Kingdom.

Martisorul is the celebration of spring.
The small artifact that is given by men to women on the 1st of March has a white and red twisted thread symbolizing the winter and the summer, the cold and the heat etc. It is worn for a few days as a brooch on the blouse or around the wrist and it is meant to bring health and wealth, luck and protection.

Artist puppeteer Monica Madas will tell the legends of the Martisor and run a workshop where children will learn how to make the artifact and cards for their mothers, while reading poems and singing.

Join us for the celebration of spring and learn how to make a martisor!

The event is organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute in partnership with Romanca Society.

When: 6 March, 2 - 4 pm;
Where: Romanian Cultural Institute London.
Free entrance.
