Internationally renowned Romanian religious choir in Leeds18, 19 and 20 January
Romanian Psalmodic Group Stavropoleos will give three concerts of Byzantine music in Leeds. The Stavropoleos Group was formed in Bucharest in 1994 aiming to revive the Romanian Byzantine musical tradition. The choir has become a role model for the Eastern Orthodox music revival. The concert program will reflect this, with works spanning six centuries and including many important chants in the Orthodox repertoire. The choir is part of the Stavropoleos Monastery founded in 1724. Situated right in the heart of Bucharest, this monastery is an important spiritual centre and one of the focal points of Romanian culture. The monastery church is a masterpiece of Romanian monastic architecture, included by UNESCO on the World Heritage Monuments list. The choir is well-known around the world, and has given successful recitals in Cyprus, Poland, Greece, France, Austria, the US and Japan. When & Where: 18 January 2008, 7.30 pm (Leeds Parish Church, Kirkgate, Leeds LS 2 7DJ), 19 January, 5 pm & 20 January, 10.30am (Romanian Orthodox Parish of Saint Macarios the Great, Mirfield).
